ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Preserve Management Assistant will travel throughout the Prairie Forest Border Ecoregion in central and southeast Minnesota participating in preserve management activities which may include some or all of the following functions: 
• Maintain preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
• Remove exotic species and/or species monitoring (including possible use of herbicides)
• Prescribed burn preparation, implementation, and post-fire monitoring
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Brush and tree removal
• Seed harvest
• Photo monitoring
• Other preserve management activities
All TNC staff actively participating on a prescribed burn must be qualified as a FFT2. The Preserve Management Assistant will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks.

This is a short-term position from April 12 through August 28, 2010.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma and 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
• Qualified as or able to meet qualifications for Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2).
• Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
• Experience performing physical work.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Experience working with natural systems. 
• Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Qualified as or able to meet qualifications for FFT2, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.  See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm
• Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. ATV, tractor, engine, chainsaw, two-way radio).
• Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
• Ability to pass US Forest Service work capacity test at arduous level (3 mile walk with 45 lb pack in 45 minutes)

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Preserve Management Assistant may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
• require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present frequent possibility of injury
• require long hours in isolated settings

GOOD DRIVING RECORD REQUIRED
This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned or leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered “high risk drivers.”  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers.  Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which will include a review of the employee’s motor vehicle record.

SALARY INFORMATION
$11 - 12.00 per hour based on experience
