Overview: 
Assist in the management of two of the Garden's natural areas: a 15-acre created prairie (exhibits six different types of prairie communities found in northeastern Illinois) and a mile-long urban river reach with an adjorning 22 acres of developing wetlands, prairie, and savanna. This position involves physically demanding work for extended periods of time. Typical work responsibilities include removal of weedy or invasive plants (including applying herbicides), planting, seed collection and cleaning, seed sowing, mowing and debris removal, participation in prescribed burns, path maintenance, and other related activities. Operation of small gas-powered equipment and use of hand tools are required. Duties also include supervising volunteers, data entry, record keeping, miscellaneous office work, and assistance with vegetative monitoring should it be needed. Some knowledge of local flora is required.
Purpose: 

Help manage the Chicago Botanic Garden 15-acre prairie and 22-acre river corridor natural areas.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Removal of invasive weeds, including applying herbicides, brush cutting and removal, digging, mowing, and removing debris (raking and hauling), deadheading, etc.
  • Planting, watering, seed collecting and cleaning, seed nursery maintenance, seed dispersal, path clearance, litter pickup, and other activities related to the development and management of the natural communities.
  • Participation in prescribed burns.
  • Supervision of volunteers.
  • Operation of small powered tools including mowers, hedge trimmers, water pumps, herbicide sprayers, and hand tools. Care and responsibility for Garden tools and machines is expected.
  • Identification of native flora encountered.
  • Assistance with plant surveys, data entry, record keeping, other miscellaneous office work, and organizational tasks as needed.
Qualifications: 

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or experience in restoration management, ecology, or the equivalent.
  • Some work experience desired but not required.
  • Proven strong work ethic.
  • Some knowledge of local flora and an interest and ability to learn additional species encountered.
  • An interest in learning about restoration management.
  • Must have an ability to work alone for long hours in the outdoors performing repetitive, arduous tasks under inclement conditions (heat, rain, mosquitoes, poison ivy, allergens, wasps), as well as in team situations.
  • An ability to operate small power tools.
  • Experience using herbicides in the removal of invasive species desired but not required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Excel and Word programs desirable.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary with a good driving record.
  • References, letter of interest, and resume required.
  • School records may be desired.
Physical Demands: 
Ability to take and pass the State of Illinois' General Standards Pesticide License Test and carry and lift 35 pounds. Willingness to take the Chicago Wilderness two-day prescribed burn training.
