SUMMARY: The Woods Hole Research Center seeks a postdoctoral researcher to participate in a tropical forest research project related to mapping forest cover changes and estimating carbon stock changes. The successful candidate will work closely with the principle investigator and collaborators on applying remote sensing image analysis techniques. This position offers research and training opportunities in an advanced remote sensing and GIS environment, with related travel to tropical forest countries for fieldwork and remote sensing capacity building.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  • be expected to process multi-sensor imagery for vegetation characterization (structure, phenology) to improve understanding of carbon dynamics in tropical ecosystems
  • perform complex geoprocessing, frequently beyond the 'push-button' approach
  • be closely engaged in a highly collaborative environment to analyze, synthesize, and present results
  • advance analysis of forest degradation and the drivers of forest cover change
  • have the opportunity to participate in capacity building and technology transfer in other countries

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. degree in Geography, Computer Science and/or a related field, with experience using earth observation imagery and a solid understanding of raster based GIS, script writing, spatial analysis and database management.
  • Experience in digital image processing software packages (Erdas, ENVI/IDL, open source) and Geospatial script writing (R/C/C#, SQL, Perl, Java, and AML useful)
  • Experience in performing RS GIS tasks in a multi-operating system environment (Windows/Linux/Mac/Solaris)
  • Travel experience in tropical countries and foreign language skills desirable (especially in French)

Appointment: This is a two-year appointment.

Application deadline: July 10, 2010.

Desired Start Date: August/September, 2010 (negotiable)

Salary Range: $45,000 to $50,000, with benefits
