Description

NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, is the Dutch national oceanographicinstitute, uniquely located on the Wadden Sea coast. It employs over 250 staff: researchscientists, lab assistants, technicians, ship crew and auxiliary staff. Our primary mission is toacquire and disseminate knowledge of seas and oceans. We wish to contribute to a sustainablefuture by increasing knowledge of our planet. We conduct research ourselves and we participate innumerous international projects, studying sites ranging from the Wadden Sea to the tropics andfrom the ocean near South-Africa to the Arctic Ocean. We also support marine research andeducation in the Netherlands and Europe. Our work focuses on pioneering and independentfundamental research into sea and ocean processes.

Marine research is carried out by five science departments; Physical Oceanography, BiologicalOceanography, Marine Ecology, Marine Organic Biogeochemistry, and Marine Geology. Theresearch of the institute focuses on five multidisciplinary research themes: Open oceanprocesses, Sea floor dynamics, Wadden and shelf sea systems, Climate variability and the sea, and Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

The department of Physical Oceanography (Department Head Dr. H. van Aken) studies oceancirculation, internal waves and long-term variability in the open ocean, over continental slopes and in the coastal zone, primarily by seagoing observational research but also by using numericalmodels and mathematical methods. One of the foci in the field of deep-sea research is the oceancirculation in the south-western Indian Ocean.

For the research project Indian-Atlantic exchange in present and past climate INATEX, thedepartment has an opportunity for a
