Postdoctoral Researcher – Thermal and Flow Measurements and Analysis
2389BR
Golden, CO
Postdoctoral Researcher
40
Develop and apply the transient thermoreflectance (TTR) technique for high-accuracy thermal resistance measurements of emerging interface materials/interfaces for power electronics packaging applications. Also develop and apply the particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) technique for quantitative flow field measurements in the design and development of heat exchangers for power electronics applications as part of the Department of Energy Advanced Power Electronics and Electric Motors Thermal Management Program. This position will support research and development conducted in-house by NREL researchers.
Job duties include designing and conducting experiments based on the TTR technique, and modeling/analysis to interpret thermal resistance/conductivity results for materials and interfaces of interest in power electronics packaging applications. These include a number of emerging materials (e.g. sintered silver, thermoplastics with embedded carbon fibers) and concepts related to bonded interfaces.
The job duties also include contributing to the design and conduct of experiments based on the PIV technique. This involves design and fabrication of specific apparatus, experimentation and data analysis to enable quantitative flow field determination in configurations of interest with both single-phase liquid and air cooling.
Candidate is expected to document work/results in reports, presentations, conferences, archival journal papers, as well as to interact with NREL partners in industry, academia and national laboratories.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
Recent Ph.D. graduate in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Materials Science with 3.0 GPA or higher. Must have knowledge and experience in laser-based diagnostic techniques such as transient thermoreflectance technique and/or particle imaging velocimetry. Must have a strong background in heat transfer and experimental techniques, as well as good working knowledge of Matlab or other similar programming environment. Demonstrated publication history in peer-reviewed journals.
Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Materials Science. Expertise and specialization in the area of heat transfer with emphasis on experimental techniques. Experience working with laser-based diagnostic techniques. Detailed knowledge of the transient thermoreflectance technique to measure thermal resistance and conductivity of materials/interfaces or alternatively, detailed knowledge of flow diagnostic techniques such as PIV for heat transfer applications. Modeling requirements are in the context of analysis and interpretation of data or results based on the diagnostic techniques mentioned above.
Demonstration of research capability and initiative to solve challenging problems. Good interpersonal, communication, writing and documentation skills. Creativity, innovation, adaptability, as well as the ability of work well in a team.
Some experience and knowledge of mechanics/strength of materials would be useful.
