Job/Research Summary The Solid State Materials group in the Chemical and Materials Science Center has an opening for a postdoctoral research position in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of III-V and II-VI semiconductors for energy-related applications. The Solid State Materials group conducts a wide range of research on understanding and controlling fundamental electronic and optical processes in semiconductors. MBE growth associated with this position will involve the exploration of laser-assisted epitaxy techniques to control bonding processes and adatom kinetics at low growth temperatures that will enable the synthesis of metastable alloys and hetero-interfaces. Growth facilities include a new MBE system with interconnected III-V and II-VI chambers and an attached low energy electron diffraction (LEED) system outfitted for simultaneous deposition/measurement. The position requires an individual with extensive experience in MBE growth and/or surface science characterization related to semiconductor epitaxy. The individual will work with the Solid State Materials team to grow semiconductor films, heterostructures and devices and characterize them using analytical, structural and spectroscopic techniques.
Job Duties Under the direction of the Solid State Materials group, the individual is responsible for MBE growth and investigation of III-V and II-VI semiconductor thin films and heterostructures. The individual will plan and conduct experiments to explore the interaction of photons with a growth surface as a means to manipulate growth mechanisms. Results will be used to develop new materials for photovoltaic and solid state lighting applications. The individual is expected to work in a team setting and publish and present findings in peer-reviewed journals and at national scientific meetings.
Required Education and Experience Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes The individual will have experience in semiconductor growth and/or analytical characterization of semiconductor or thin film surfaces. Knowledge and experience with ultra-high vacuum systems is required. A general knowledge of semiconductor material physics and characterization, including x-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical and electrical measurement techniques, is also desired. The individual must have strong scientific writing and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team.
Preferred Qualifications PhD in materials science, physics or a related field.
Background in photovoltaic and/or light emitting diode devices.
The ability to be creative and master new skills.
