Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a leading international conservation, science and education charity. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries around the world and through education and engagement at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a 2 year project funded by IUCN/European Commission entitled “Sustainable fishing in the Arctic: Can the harvest of Greenland’s biggest export be compatible with the conservation of benthic ecosystems?”. The West coast of Greenland is home to commercially important coldwater prawn and halibut fisheries.Their entrance into the MSC sustainability scheme has highlighted a concerning lack of knowledge of benthic habitats in the area, and the impact of trawling activities upon these habitats.

The project will conduct photographic surveys of the West Greenland benthos to document the structure, function and diversity of seafloor communities. This data will be used to map, model and predict distributions of benthic habitats, assess the impact of trawling and highlight potential vulnerable marine ecosystems. Specimens, images, interactive web resources, and educational games will be used in a series of outreach events designed to engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders including: fishermen, industry leaders, children and the general public.

This project provides an incredible opportunity for an early career researcher to play a key role in delivering this european research project by promoting and supporting the sustainable use of marine resources.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct photographic and video surveys of the seabed using ZSL's benthic camera system.
  • Identify and analyse benthic invertebrates from images.
  • Produce information of vulnerable benthic habitats suitable for use in both scientific and non-scientific reports.
  • Organise and conduct outreach activities in Greenland and UK to educate the public on the importance and value of benthic habitats (with the assistance of ZSL's discovery and learning team).
  • Support the generation of teaching resources.
  • Provide ongoing support on project planning, implementation, analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Make travel and logistical arrangements for field visits.
  • Ensure deliverables are achieved according to the grant contract.
  • Compilation of technical and financial reports to satisfy donor requirements.
  • General administrative support for the project.
  • Disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be educated to PhD degree standard in Marine Biology or Fisheries Management, or equivalent qualification or have equivalent level of work experience in a related field.
  • Have prior experience conducting marine research on seagoing ships.
  • Have practical experience collecting, collating and analysing benthic videos and/or photography.
  • Previous exposure to conducting outreach activities for schoolchildren and/or the general public.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of marine conservation, sustainable fishing and benthic invertebrates.
  • Have good working knowledge of using statistical, GIS, and image analysis software packages.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to speak Danish would be highly desirable.
