The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL’s Silicon Materials and Devices Group in the National Center for Photovoltaics has an immediate opening for a full time Postdoctoral Researcher. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to a maximum of three years.
The Silicon Materials and Devices Group develops new materials and devices for renewable energy and other applications, with projects spanning from basic research to device applications. The Postdoctoral Researcher will research layers, nanostructures and growth interfaces that enable fabrication of novel c-Si films for high photovoltaics performance. Initial efforts will include fabricating and understanding 1) the nanomechanical properties required for transfering thin silicon layers and 2) dislocation-filtered growth of epitaxial c-Si films on nanoengineered seed layers. The resulting film Si layers will be used to fabricate solar cells. New findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals. Specific duties include: Collaboration with group scientists in the planning, analysis, realization and interpretation of basic scientific experiments on these film Si materials. Design and growth of nanostructured seed layers and subsequent fabrication of film c-Si solar cells, including cleanroom work, deposition, and characterization. Development and application of cutting-edge experimental and modeling techniques. Publication of results in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Presentation of work at scientific conferences and review meetings. Adherence to NREL’s high safety standards.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
Candidates must have a recent doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Nano-Mechanical Engineering and expertise in: structural, electronic, mechanical properties of materials; materials processing; understanding and producing nanostructured materials; use of sophisticated experimental equipment.

Strong scientific research skills (creating hypotheses, experiment design and implementation, simulations and modeling), as well as writing skills demonstrated by experience in writing quality scientific papers. Communications skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team. Significant cleanroom and wet chemical experience.
A thesis or publications involving producing and characterizing nano- or microstructured materials and/or devices. Experience with engineering, processing, and testing mechanical and structural properties on the nanoscale. Deformation modeling. Familiarity with silicon or other semiconductor material properties including defects, strain, and solar cell physics, PV device structures, and design tools.
