Postdoctoral Researcher - Exascale Algorithm Development, and Biomass Pyrolysis Simulation
2257BR
Golden, CO
Postdoctoral Researcher

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden and Boulder, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies. NREL's Computational Science Center has an immediate opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in computational combustion. The assignment is for one year with possible renewal for up to three years.

First principles simulation of turbulent reacting flows (DNS) and biomass pyrolysis share a need for massively parallel algorithms to account for disparate length and timescales that must be resolved to account for the relevant physical processes.

The successful applicant will work closely with NREL scientists and engineers as well as scientists from the Combustion Exascale Design Center to develop and test novel algorithms for reacting flow solvers that will run on the next generation of supercomputers. Scientific software for the exascale era is expected to require a massive increase in concurrency, and this position will focus on developing software tools that can solve real world technical issues today while providing a natural evolution to future hardware. This position offers a unique opportunity to implement new physics capabilities using lessons learned from exascale software design exercise in order to simulate fluid flow, structural changes, and reaction pathways in biomass particles undergoing pyrolysis.
(i) Work closely with NREL scientists and engineers to create new, and improve existing, open-source computational-modeling tools for analysis of biomass pyrolysis processes.

(ii) Devise, implement, and test novel CFD solution algorithms suitable for exascale computation at the terascale.

(iii) Carry out proof-of-concept simulations using currently available open source software and identify gaps in currently available tools that must be addressed in order to meet domain science long term objectives.

(iv) Contribute to NREL technical reports, write papers and present results at national meetings.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
PhD degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or equivalent; effective interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills; must be able to work well independently as well as within a group.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: massively parallel and high-performance computational science, MPI, OpenMP, numerical methods for partial-differential equations including finite difference, finite element algorithms, fracture mechanics, turbulence, chemical mechanism development and reduction, fluid-structure interactions. Strong programming skills in FORTRAN and C/C++ languages essential. Software development experience in a collaborative environment using formal processes of source code management, testing, verification and validation would be beneficial, as would a strong track record in cross-disciplinary, collaborative research.
