The National Renewable Energy Laboratory - NREL - is the only federal laboratory dedicated to the research, development, commercialization and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL's National Bioenergy Center (NBC)has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the NBC advanced analytical chemistry research group. The assignment is for one year with possible renewal for up to three years.
Future biofuels pathways will likely focus on hydrocarbon-based fuels from a variety of sources, including microbial and algal lipids. Novel conversion pathways are being developed in a wide range of organisms and broad chemical conversion chemistries are deployed.
Researcher in the NBC are characterizing fuel fractions of a variety of microbial oils and hydrocarbon biofuel precursors.
The successful candidate will contribute to research and development activities within the NBC by developing advanced analytical chemical techniques for these oils and biofuel precursors via mass spectroscopy coupled with gas and liquid chromatography.
Design and execute laboratory experiments to isolate oil and biofuel percursor fractions from a variety of biomass samples, perform multiple chemical analyses (including GC/MS and LC/MS) on these fractions, and interpret and communicate the results.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
Demonstrated experience with GC/MS and LC/MS analysis, including hands-on operation of the instrumentation, and data reduction and interpretation. Some exposure to biology fundamentals.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Biochemistry, have experience in managing large mass spectroscopy data sets, have solid statistical analysis, experimental design, and data mining skills, and have a publication record in relevant areas.
NREL is dedicated to the principles of equal employment opportunity. NREL promotes a work environment that does not discriminate against workers or job applicants and prohibits unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, marital status, ancestry, actual or perceived sexual orientation, or veteran status, including special disabled veterans.
NREL validates right to work using E-Verify. NREL will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee’s Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
