Description

We are seeking an exceptional social science or interdisciplinary candidate to pursue research on the resilience of coastal small-scale fisheries in the face of climate change. The appointee will enjoy the opportunities to collaborate with leading social scientists, interdisciplinary and ecology researchers in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and the WorldFish-led Flagship on “Resilient Small-scale Fisheries” within the CGIAR Research Program on Fish Agri-Food Systems (FISH CRP). The candidate will be provided with exceptional support to develop an ongoing social science program of research linked to the objectives of the position that suits her or his interests and abilities.

WorldFish and ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies have common interests in improving environmental and social outcomes in, and for, small-scale fisheries. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies is an internationally renowned research centre encompassing >200 researchers and graduate students, with ongoing research projects in 30 countries. The vision of the Centre is to provide the scientific knowledge necessary for understanding the world’s coral reefs and their interactions with people in order to foster their sustainable use, secure the benefits they provide to the tropical societies and economies, and enhance the effectiveness of coral reef management world-wide. WorldFish is an international non-profit scientific agency working in Africa, Asia and the Pacific to ‘reduce poverty and hunger through improving fisheries and aquaculture’. WorldFish has a global staff of about 330, permanent offices in 7 countries and ongoing projects in 25 countries.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Conduct research independently and as part of a team which contributes to the achievement of the aims of the FISH CRP and the ARC Centre of Excellence
  • Contribute to research planning and delivery as core member of the WorldFish’s Flagship on Resilient Small-scale fisheries
  • Provide expert input, as required, to components of multi-disciplinary projects that may include development, fisheries, governance and climate change impacts, adaptation and policy
  • Publish research in high-quality journals and communicate research through a range of social channels
  • Work collaboratively with research and other partners, including communicating research process and findings in policy venues
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  • Co-supervise graduate students enrolled at James Cook University and/or provide research capacity building/mentoring to early career researchers in focal countries, where appropriate.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • PhD in environmental social science or a related discipline
  • Exceptional publication record for stage of career
  • Evidence exceptional research ability, including a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in developing-country settings with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated research skills in a cognate discipline (e.g., fisheries science, geography, development studies, economics, sociology).
  • Established links (national and international) with appropriate research organisations and personnel.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Employment Type

Appointment will be full time (or equivalent) for three years.

Salary

Academic A: $A64,980-$A86,829pa plus 17% superannuation contribution.
Academic B: $A91,206-$107,619pa plus 17% superannuation contribution.
Level of appointment and commencing salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
