Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

Two full time posts are available immediately on a permanent basis.

Summary of the role

The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy wishes to recruit two researchers to join the Centre for Energy and Environment (the Centre), a small but long-standing research group specialising in aspects of the built environment with a focus on energy, low carbon buildings and related areas. Researchers at the Centre are engaged in applied research and consultancy in the public and private sector.

Successful applicants will work closely with other members of the team and with external clients to develop research proposals, undertake research and analysis, and present results in a variety of formats including technical reports and presentations.

Work carried out at the Centre with public and private sector clients is varied and can identify primary sources of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and shape subsequent emissions reduction strategies. Within the public sector, research at the Centre has contributed directly to decision and policy making on energy and carbon emissions in local and national government.

Research at the Centre is often conducted over relatively short timescales (weeks/months rather than years), and draws on data from government bodies, published research or more directly using our own monitoring and assessment capabilities. While research is often desk-based, travel to sites and meetings may also be required.

About you

The successful applicant will be effective as a researcher and as a communicator and possess a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study.

You will be familiar with the climate change agenda including primary causes, options for mitigation and adaptation, and be aware of current policies. You will be expected to have  technical knowledge in one or more areas of interest to the Centre such as low carbon planning and construction, renewable energy, energy efficiency, demand management, transport or waste. Other relevant technical expertise will be considered if it enhances the services that the group currently offers.

Much of the work carried out at the Centre is data driven and you will be expected to have skills in data processing and analysis as well as the ability to distil complex or multi-faceted problems into component parts in order to prioritise actions and responses. As part of a small but dedicated team, you should be comfortable working independently or a part of a group. You should also be willing to develop new skills and expertise where there are benefits to the Centre and its clients.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
