Scaup Population Model Evaluation and Decision Support

Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position to evaluate a predictive population model and perform decision analyses related to scaup (Aythya affinis, A. marila) conservation planning.  Expected results from these analyses will serve to address the need for developing effective conservation strategies that better integrate the objectives of waterfowl habitat and population management while explicitly accounting for specific aspects of human dimensions.  A functional prototype scaup population model has been developed that explicitly incorporates linked sub models for: (1) habitat management, (2) harvest management, and (3) hunter population.  The focus of the postdoctoral work is finalizing the model parameterization, performing sensitivity analyses to characterize key sources of uncertainty, and developing formal decision analysis support tools for conservation planning.  The successful applicant will also interact with the waterfowl conservation community, communicate results on a timely basis, verbally and in writing, and solicit feedback on model performance and projections.

The postdoctoral position will be part of an interagency research team, including scientists from U. S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, Environment Canada, among others.  The research team will provide substantial conceptual and empirical support, including access to appropriate data and review of model details. Professional development opportunities will also be available, determined in consultation with the research team.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a background in population modeling, waterfowl population dynamics, structured decision making, and decision analysis/adaptive management.  Proficient programming skills are required, particularly in Visual Basic and/or Program R, or an equivalent system for modeling.  The successful candidate will also have excellent writing and personal communication skills.  Applicants are expected to have earned a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline, preferably within the last 5 years.

The position will be located in Laurel, Maryland at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.  The desired start date is July-August, 2012, and the position is funded for up to 12 months.  The salary level is very competitive; allowance for housing and benefits are included.

Applications are due no later than 1 August 2012.  If you are interested, please apply online and include curriculum vitae, a letter describing your background and interests, and the names of three references to Dale Humburg (dhumburg@ducks.org) and Scott Boomer (scott_boomer@fws.gov).
