SUMMARY: The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) seeks a postdoctoral fellow for a two-year fixed-term position expanding and applying our existing ecosystem and global climate models to investigate the sensitivity of Amazonia to anthropogenic change. The position will be based at WHRC and reports to the Principal Investigator of the Amazon Savannization Projects. The postdoctoral fellow will join an international science team that uses numerical models, field experiments, and satellite applications to investigate the impacts of land use/land cover changes and climate variability on the water, energy, and carbon cycles of the Amazon River basin. The primary duties of the position will be to collaborate with numerical modelers and field researchers at WHRC and Brazilian institutions to analyze data on ecosystem functioning, use these data to improve the IBIS dynamic vegetation model, and apply IBIS with global and regional climate models to better understand the effects of rapid agricultural expansion on the coupled land surface climate system.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate modeling projects of the effects of deforestation on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Amazon
  • Participate in the broader project goals to quantify human influences in the Amazon
  • Evaluate and incorporate insights from new field data within existing models
  • Lead and participate in scientific publications
  • Other tasks as agreed upon in the course of the research

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field; experience in running one or more ecosystem models, atmospheric models, and dynamic vegetation models; experience in programming and model development.
  • Numerical modeling, ecological applications, data management
  • Working knowledge of Fortran
  • Fluency in or desire to learn Portuguese preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication

Salary Range: $50,000 to $55,000 with full benefit package, exempt position.
