The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities in Townsville Queensland, Perth Western Australia, and Darwin Northern Territory, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support.  Our people deliver innovative research in water quality, tropical marine biodiversity, climate change and marine microbiology.

 

About this Opportunity

This is an opportunity to play an active role in investigating the presence of sharks in coral reef habitats in the western Pacific Ocean, Coral Triangle and Indian Ocean.  You will work on a project entitled “The global reef shark fin print: a worldwide underwater video survey of shark abundance, diversity and ecological effects on coral reef ecosystems”.  Postdoctoral research will focus on analysis of spatial distributions of reef shark abundance on both regional and global scales.

Attractive working conditions apply including a commencing salary of $77,866 - $88,610 plus 15.4% superannuation, generous leave, commuter car transportation to site, relocation assistance and many other benefits.  This opportunity will initially be offered for a fixed term period of three years and will be located in Townsville, Queensland.

 

About You

You will be an early career researcher with a PhD and a record of impressive academic achievement who will explore the status of reef sharks around the globe, with the appointee serving one sector of the global survey.

You will be skilled and knowledgeable in the areas of:

  • Coral Reef Ecology
  • Coral reef sharks and fish species
  • Quantitative skills in analysis of ecological data
  • Field based experience at sea working in remote and oceanic locations
