Description

Uncertainty analysis for the economic assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation

Postdoctoral Fellow, Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3)

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a postdoctoral position in the context of the EU FP7 project BASE: Bottom-up Climate Adaptation Strategies towards a Sustainable Europe . The postdoctoral researcher will assist in developing a methodology to explicitly account for uncertainty in the economic assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation measures. Methods to evaluate uncertainties will include scenarios, probabilistic assessments and sensitivity analysis. For the management of uncertainty a wide range of approaches will be investigated ranging from ad-hoc rules, low regret- and robust design-strategies to more quantitative methods such as the use of real options or risk premiums.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will:

  • Conduct generic research for characterising and managing uncertainty in economic assessments of climate change impacts and adaptation measures.
  • Assist partners at BC3 developing a case study for the Madrid area with uncertainty assessment
  • Provide support on uncertainty- and sensitivity analysis to partners within the BASE consortium responsible for the integrated assessment model and for the up-scaling at the European level.
  • Publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.

Experience/skills required:

  • The applicant must have a PhD with a strong background in uncertainty- and sensitivity analysis and mathematical modelling.
  • The applicant must have excellent interpersonal as well communication skills (both written and oral) in English.
  • The applicant should demonstrate evidence of a track record in peer-reviewed publications as well as the ability to initiate and complete research characterized by originality, creativity and innovation.

Location: Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Bilbao, Spain.

Tenure: The position will be for a period of 18 months.

Salary: The position will carry competitive salaries according to the academic and professional profile of the applicant and excellent conditions of work.

Applications: Applicants are invited to submit their CV, a one page motivation letter and the contact details of three referees to hr@bc3research.org with “postdoctoral position on uncertainty” in the subject line. Informal enquiries can be made to Prof. Anil Markandya (anil.markandya@bc3research.org) or Dr. Marc Neumann (marc.neumann@bc3research.org).

Closing date: 31 October 2013

Co-benefits of cross-sectoral adaptation strategies to reduce impacts from heat waves and droughts

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development of a methodological framework to assess costs and benefits of cross-sectoral adaptation strategies to reduce the impacts of heat waves and droughts. The analysis will focus explicitly on a set of adaptation measures able to produce co-benefits in different sectors. Specific attention will be given to the sectors of water, health and urban ecosystems. The area of Madrid has been chosen as a case study due to its multiple vulnerabilities due to climate change, its large size and population, its drought-prone climate and its use of trans-boundary water.

Specifically the Postdoctoral Fellow will:

  • Assist in the development of the general methodological framework for quantifying co-benefits.
  • Identify adaptation measures with co-benefits to the water and health sectors and to urban ecosystems.
  • Develop economic models for cost-benefit analysis to assess a combined set of measures.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in Madrid and the Tajo river basin.
  • Participate in project meetings within the BASE consortium.
  • Publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.

Experience/skills required:

  • The applicant must have a PhD in environmental economics/sciences or a related field as well as a strong background in environmental valuation and econometric modelling. Expertise in the areas of health and water is desirable.
  • The applicant must have excellent interpersonal as well communication skills (written and oral) in both English and Spanish.

Applications: Applicants are invited to submit their CV, a one page motivation letter and the contact details of three referees to hr@bc3research.org with “postdoctoral position on co-benefits” in the subject line. Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Aline Chiabai (aline.chiabai@bc3research.org) or Dr. Marc Neumann (marc.neumann@bc3research.org).
