CSIRO has a Postdoctoral opportunity to work with the Photovoltaics Group at the Energy Centre in Newcastle. The group conducts projects ranging from the fundamental development of new PV device technologies to the assessment of product performance and measurements to international standards.

The successful candidate will take a lead role on a project aimed at improving the industry's understanding of energy yield for PV power systems. The work will involve advanced laboratory and outdoor studies of cell performance, followed by the construction and evaluation of theoretical models to predict the energy yield for systems built from different PV technologies. The project will require a twelve-month period spent working overseas at the site of our US partner.

Specifically you will:

  • Design, construct and carry out laboratory measurements to study the performance of various solar cell technologies under changing conditions consistent with those experienced by a PV system in the field
  • Liaise with our Australian partners to build system-level considerations into prediction models
  • Contribute technically to construction of the next stage of CSIRO’s photovoltaics performance characterisation facility
  • Present the outcomes of your research at national and international conferences

Location: Newcastle, NSW

Salary: $73K to $82K (plus up to 15.4% superannuation)

Tenure: 3 year term

Ref No: NSW02212

To be successful you will have :

  • A PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering, awarded in or after November 2008
  • Previous experience in photovoltaics research, with demonstrated strengths in optical methods of PV device characterisation
  • A sound understanding of the physical mechanisms underpinning the performance of photovoltaic devices
  • Extensive experience and a high level of proficiency with programming in LabView
  • Availability to be based in the USA for a period of at least twelve months, commencing February 2012
