Description

DURATION: Full-time position, starting immediately. One year position with the option to continue for a second year.

DUTIES: Design and carry out a research program that will be an integral part of the multi-site Environmental Science Literacy (ESL) project, addressing one or more of these goals: (1) Define and elaborate environmental science literacy learning progressions and assessments, focusing on water, carbon and biodiversity in socio-ecological systems, quantitative reasoning and/or citizenship skills. (2) Explore variation in students' and teachers' environmental science thinking and learning. (3) Develop and test innovative environmental science teaching resources. The research program may include clinical interviews, standardized (within the project) assessments, or new assessments developed by the postdoctoral researcher. Research sites can include New York, Baltimore, Washington DC, Michigan, Colorado, Wyoming and/or Santa Barbara. The research should lead to publications in peer reviewed literature, and presentations at national meetings. Provide support to other research components of the ESL project. Participate in programmatic aspects of the ESL project, assisting with professional development activities for teachers and with production and testing of teaching materials for school use. Participate in ecological research for up to 40% of time, if requested. The postdoc will be centered at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY with periodic travel to Baltimore, MD.

BACKGROUND: Ph.D. in either education or in a relevant field of natural or social science. Experience in K-12 education, preferably middle or high school level. Strong research, organizational, interpersonal and writing skills required. Strong analytical skills a plus. Familiarity with Baltimore and urban ecology highly desirable.
