Postdoc Position
in Polar Predictability at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Traditionally, most of the skill of seasonal and decadal predictions has been thought to reside in the tropics and the North Atlantic Ocean, respectively. Recently, there has been an emerging body of evidence, however, that polar processes might be another, yet largely untapped source of predictive skill on seasonal to multi-decadal time scales. The successful applicant will be exploring polar predictability on time scales from seasonal to decadal. Research will focus on
• identifying polar processes that provide predictive skill,
• determining instabilities of the polar climate system, and
• representing the structure of observational and model error.
The scientist will be responsible for modifying and running a global coupled climate model consisting of the atmosphere model ECHAM6 and the finite element sea-ice ocean model FESOM. Furthermore, the successful applicant will contribute to running numerical experiments on supercomputers, securing computing resources, analyzing the results, participate in scientific conferences and publish in peer reviewed journals.
Length of contract: three years, with the possibility of extension.
Payment will be in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TvöD 13).
