Postdoc (f/m)?for biomarker and geochemical studies in the Pacific Southern Ocean

Division:Geosciences

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), division „Geosciences“, section “Marine Geology and Paleontology”, is seeking to appoint within the framework of the research project MARUM OC3 “Atmosphere-ocean interactions between high and low latitudes” a

Postdoc (f/m)?

for biomarker and geochemical studies in the Pacific Southern Ocean

MARUM OC3 is part of the Research Area “Ocean and Climate” of the Research Center / Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean in the Earth System” (MARUM) at the University of Bremen, Germany and aims to investigate the atmosphere-ocean interactions and teleconnections between high and low latitudes with a focus on the Pacific Ocean. Atmosphere-ocean interactions are thought to play a key role in past atmospheric CO2 variability, by controlling the sea-ice field, upper ocean physical parameters and stratification, nutrient utilization and biological export, deep-water exposure rates, and high-low latitude exchange of nutrients and heat. For the first time, Pleistocene atmosphere-ocean processes will be studied in the high-latitude South Pacific using a large set of recently recovered sediment cores. The Postdoc is expected to accomplish biomarker (alkenones, dioles, n-alkanes, BIT, MBT/CBT) and 230Thexc measurements for defining terrestrial and biogenic flux rates and their relation to SST variability.

Requirements: The successful candidate should hold a PhD in geology, oceanography, geochemistry or marine environmental sciences. We expect previous expertise in paleoceanography and organic geochemistry combined with excellent English language skills as well as the ability to publish in international science journals. Furthermore, team-work skills and the willingness to actively cooperate with a diverse international working group including e.g. biologists, physicists and climate modelers are expected. The candidates should be willing to participate in up to 2-month long ship cruises and research stays abroad.

The position is limited to 3 years, starting in January 2013. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst des Bundes, TVöD (salary level 13).

The AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
