PostDoc position

Division:Climate Sciences

The sea ice physics section of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI), department climate sciences, invites applications for a

PostDoc position

The work will be part of the European Space Agency (ESA) funded project Climate Change Initiative (CCI) on “Antarctic Sea Ice Thickness”.

Tasks: The goal of the project is to review uncertainties for Antarctic sea-ice freeboard retrieval from satellite radar altimeter data (CryoSat-2) and to develop appropriate algorithms based on an existing Arctic processor. Major challenge is the unknown radar penetration into the thick and highly stratified snow cover. The successful candidate will analyze CryoSat-2 radar altimeter data for its potential to derive a consistent freeboard data set of Antarctic sea ice. Besides working with CryoSat-2 data, airborne and ground validation measurements will be used to estimates satellite retrieval uncertainties. The results will be summarized in a technical document. The project cooperative includes international partners within the ESA CCI project.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in geophysics, meteorology or physics. Expertise in the physics of sea ice, the processing and interpretation of satellite remote-sensing data with special emphasis on radar altimetry and the implementation of field campaigns are beneficial. We expect profound skills in scientific programming. The international nature of the project requires fluency in spoken and written English and good presentation and publication skills. The successful candidate will work with a small CryoSat-2 remote sensing team, but is expected to work self reliably on this project. The position requires the ability to join weeks-long research expeditions into Antarctic sea ice.

The position is limited to 18 months, beginning as soon as possible. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD (Bund), salary group 13).
