Location Information:

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) seeks a post-doctoral research scientist within the Climate Group. The successful applicant will participate in a NOAA-funded project to assess decadal-scale climate variability and predictability based on data from observations and coupled ocean-atmosphere models. This research bridges the climate change and seasonal-to-interannual time scales, building on model verification and diagnostic studies to generate regional climate outlooks for the next 10-20 years.

Description:

The successful candidate will support this project in three areas: a) diagnostic studies of teleconnection processes, b) data manipulation and analysis and c) interpretation of results in the context of climate risk management needs expressed by IRI partners. Desired characteristics include a solid grounding in climate dynamics, knowledge of dominant processes involved in climate variability and change, and experience working with data from coupled ocean-atmosphere models. Experience building or running simplified dynamical models would be a plus.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in meteorology or a related field is required. The position is initially for one year, beginning in early 2010, with a possibility of a one-year renewal and future promotion possibility subject to performance and availability of funds.    Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Columbia University benefits accompany appointments. This position is located in Rockland County, NY at the Lamont Campus of Columbia University. Prospective candidates must apply online at https://academicjobs.columbia.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=51951
