About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

We are looking for a Post-doctoiral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join a multi-disciplinary research team working on a BBSRC-funded project called Multiple Herbicide Resistance in Grass Weeds: from genes to agro-ecosystems. The project is exploring resistance mechanisms in weeds, the evolutionary ecology of resistance in the field, and strategies that might be developed to reduce resistance, improve agricultural productivity while at the same time protecting the environment. The project involves the Universities of Newcastle, Sheffield and Edinburgh, plus Rothmasted Research and the Institute of Zoology in London.  The post holder will be based at the Institute of Zoology and will be responsible for leading work that explores the wider impacts of weed and herbicide resistance management strategies on farm economics, farmland biodiversity and agro-ecosystems.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and execution of the science relating to work package 5 (WP5) of the project, which aims to explore the wider economic and environmental consequences of weed and resistance management strategies.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other project partners, particularly the University of Sheffield with whom the PDRA will need to closely collaborate to deliver WP5.
  • Developing and maintaining databases that host data generated by WP5.
  • Analysis of data and communication of project findings to the project team, external stakeholders and a variety of other external audiences.
  • Production and publication of high quality outputs from the research and the wider dissemination of the project’s findings, in collaboration with other project partners.
  • Day-to-day monitoring and management of project funding within budgetary constraints, and for reporting on spending at regular intervals as required.
  • Developing an effective and sensitive working relationship with farmers involved in the project.

Person Specification:

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD in a relevant area of ecology or environmental science or equivalent level of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team is desirable.

Skills & Abilities

  •  An ability to design and execute research projects.
  • An ability to work effectively and productively as part of a research team.
  • Advanced skills in data management, analysis and graphics in R, and in the use of MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • An ability to produce high quality science outputs, particularly peer-reviewed publications.
  • High quality skills in the communication of science (written and verbal) to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • An ability to form and maintain relationships with key stakeholders associated with research projects.

Other Requirements

  • Periodic travel to project management meetings and a variety of science communication events in the UK and potentially overseas.
  • Periodic visits to study farms within the UK.
