Description

Post-doctoral position, section Observational Oceanography

Division:Climate Sciences

The section Observational Oceanography invites applications for a Post-doctoral position in the framework of the multi-disciplinary HGF-funded research programme: “Polar Regions and Coasts in the changing Earth System”http://www.awi.de/en/research/research_programme/paces_2009_2014/.

Background: The Arctic climate is currently in rapid transition, exemplified by the marked reduction of sea-ice, accumulation of fresh water and increased heat inflow from the Atlantic. The nature of this variability and its link to global changes is not understood. AWI maintains long-term observations in the Arctic Ocean which are prerequisites to decipher the relevant mechanisms of the ocean in the climate system and lay the ground for future assessments.

Task: Detailed task of the position is the quantification of ocean exchange of heat and fresh water between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean and their budgets in the Arctic on the basis of existing data sets from the past decades and analysis of the underlying processes. The candidate will work in a team that combines observations and numerical modelling for investigating the interaction between Arctic Ocean, atmosphere and sea ice. The work is embedded in international programmes.
Observations will be continued involving implementation of new technology such as gliders and acoustic underwater communication techniques. The candidate is expected to participate in scientific cruises in the Arctic.

Requirements: We seek a person holding a PhD degree in physical oceanography or related disciplines. A strong background in fluid dynamics and experience with data analysis are necessary, experience in sea-going work is desirable.

AWI supports the combination of job and family. It offers nursery places at its Bremerhaven site.
This position has a three year limitation. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrages für den öffentlichen Dienst des Bundes (TVöD). The position is located at the AWI site in Bremerhaven.

The AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and is expressly inviting qualified female scientists to apply for the position. Disabled applicants with identical technical and personal suitability will be preferentially selected, please see our notification on our homepage under job offers / jobs. The AWI supports balanced work-life career development via a variety of alternatives. In Bremerhaven, the AWI operates its own nursery.
