Description

With a focus on cold water coastal & shelf benthic systems, and in close cooperation with other working groups, the division Biosciences, section Functional Ecology, pursues advanced ecological concepts and tools in order to gain a better understanding of ecosystem internal functioning and its constraints, and to contribute to the development of likely future ecosystem scenarios in a changing world. Our macroecological & macrophysiological approach is spatially and temporally explicit to account for environmental and ecological variability in space and.

In order to strengthen our expertise in geo-referenced ecological modeling, we offer a

Post-doctoral position in GIS-based marine ecology

with 3 years duration and starting in spring 2012.

Tasks:
The successful applicant will become a member of our working group that creates and develops GIS-based data banks and models for North Sea, Arctic and Antarctic benthic systems. His/her main responsibility will be the development of habitat models and of species distribution models and to integrate these into spatially explicit benthic community maps that can predict the spatial distribution of community characteristics (e.g., biodiversity, abundance, biomass, functional traits). In combination with species performance models, geo-referenced ecological niche-models will be developed that allow to quantify community goods and services (such as bioturbation & water pumping or community metabolism & production) at spatial scales and under changing environmental conditions. The latter approach requires the development of interfaces to dynamic physical models such as the Community Ocean Model.

Prerequisites:
- Expertise and experience in the application of GIS tools, particularly ArcView
- Expertise and experience in the development of ecological models (GIS-based)
- Expertise and experience in relevant statistical applications
- Knowledge in marine (benthic) ecology and taxonomy
- PhD in marine ecology, biological oceanography, general ecology or a related field
- English language skills that are sufficient for scientific communication and writing
- Ability and willingness to participate in seagoing expeditions

This is a three years fixed-term position. The compensation complies with the collective agreement of the public service compensation guidelines (TVöD).
