AgResearch is a Crown-owned research organisation supporting the New Zealand economy by delivering innovative solutions to the pastoral sector. We are seeking an emerging scientist to research the interface between grass/endophyte associations and grazing animals.
You’ll join a world renowned team tasked with developing and testing new non-toxic grass/endophyte associations and exploring ways to minimise the impact of toxic fungal endophytes and other pasture mycotoxins in livestock grazing systems. The team comprises well established scientists with expertise in a wide range of disciplines, and works closely with producer groups and research and commercial partners, both nationally and internationally.
Your enthusiasm and “can do” attitude to perform research, ability to learn new skills, and excellent interpersonal skills will add value to our team. This is primarily a field research position and you will often be working outdoors. You will be responsible for researching the: • Effects of different fungal endophytes on animal physiology, health and production in sheep and cattle grazing systems. • Effects of specific endophyte metabolites on animal response. This will involve grazing trials together with indoor feeding trials You will also contribute to the team effort in testing livestock performance on new grass/endophyte associations, immediately prior to their commercialisation
To ensure your research is of the highest standard, you will be encouraged to publish results in recognised scientific journals, network with and present seminars to farmers and the wider pastoral community, and seek new opportunities and solutions to production constraints in grazing systems.
You should be motivated, independent, career-minded animal scientist and have • A PhD or other high level post graduate degree in Animal or Plant Science with preferred experience in livestock grazing • Knowledge of basic ruminant physiology and metabolism • Familiarity with grazing systems and aptitude to work at the plant animal interface of grazing research • Empathy with New Zealand livestock farming and readiness to interact with, and present to, a variety of large groups from within the pastoral industry • A proven ability to carry out research at the plant /animal interface • Good practical agricultural, animal husbandry and stock management skills • Preferably, a knowledge of grass/endophyte associations and their impact on pasture and grazing animals
