Description

The European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau (EIPPCB) as part of the Sustainable Production and Consumption Unit is looking for a researcher to contribute to the review of the reference documents on Best Available Techniques. The Bureau supports the implementation of the EU's Industrial Emissions Directive (IED, 2010/75/EU) that is progressively replacing the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, one of the Community's key instruments for ensuring sustainable production and environmental protection.

Best Available Technique reference Documents (BREFs) are developed by the Bureau in consultation with stakeholders and adopted by the Commission and then published for use in the Member States.

The successful candidate will have following duties:

- contribute to the discussion/exchange of information with the stakeholders on issues of interest to the review of one or several BREFs

- manage BREF related information especially by researching information relevant to one or several BREFs and analysing and validating/peer reviewed information provided by the stakeholders

- contribute to the draft of the one or several BREFs based on the information.

We are looking for an engineer or chemist or another professional with a good knowledge of industrial processes and related environmental issues in one or more areas covered by the European IPPC Bureau. He/she should have a good understanding of process engineering, environmental issues and regulation of industry, an understanding of environmental policy in the EU, a thorough knowledge of the IPPC/IED Directives and the concepts within. It is important to have computer skills, an open mind and positive attitude with the ability to assess submitted information and to be able to participate in expert discussions and meetings. The successful candidate will be self motivated and able to manage a project to deadlines. He/she will be able to work and write technical documents in English language.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree or have a minimum of 5 years research experience after the first university degree giving access to doctoral studies (which may include periods of training such as a masters degree), in a field relevant to the JRC's scientific activities. Candidates who have not yet completed all the formalities to obtain a PhD or who have not yet attained 5 years of research experience on the date of application may also be considered as eligible to apply. However the PhD must have been obtained or the 5 years of research experience reached prior to the signature of the grantholder contract.

A very good level of written and spoken English is essential and knowledge of at least one other EU language is compulsory.
