Population and Sustainability Director

General position overview:
The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, hard-charging and creative leader for our groundbreaking Population and Sustainability Program. The Population and Sustainability Director will be supervised by the Field Director. The Director will work closely with other organizing, communications, conservation and development staff. This is an opportunity to expand and lead the environmental movement’s most innovative campaign to raise awareness about the connection between rampant human population growth, overconsumption and consumer choices, and species extinction due to resource depletion and environmental degradation. The Director must have excellent communication and organizational skills; seasoned leadership capabilities; expertise and working knowledge of population, overconsumption, sustainability, and environmental issues and politics; an ability to think strategically and manage short- and long-term projects; and a be a self-starter personality with the ability to work well independently and collaboratively. Passion for and experience with endangered species issues is desired.

Main duties:
- Strategic planning and execution of the Program, including overseeing and directing program staff.
- Emerging as a national leader and voice on population and sustainability issues for media, policymakers, allies and Center supporters.
- Tracking national and international science, communications and trends on human population growth, sustainability issues and the environment.
- Developing and executing policy initiatives related to population and sustainability issues.
- Creating and implementing short- and long-range public education and action campaigns to connect population growth and overconsumption with endangered species impacts.
- Educating and activating other environmental groups on population and sustainability issues; invigorating deep and lasting interest among like-minded organizations to build grassroots support and effect change.
- Cultivating, managing and inspiring online and offline activists who are eager to make a difference on these crucial issues.
- Overseeing the Endangered Species Condoms program, including its strategy, condom and information distribution, event planning, and coordination of thousands of volunteer distributors.
- Writing and helping produce the Center’s monthly online population newsletter Pop X.
- Overseeing social media accounts for the Program and integrating Program materials into other Center communications.
 - Generating press releases, reports, Web materials and op-eds, as well as working with the media in general.

 Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:
- Seasoned leadership role in the environmental and/or population movement.
- Minimum associate or bachelor degree.
- Two to four years’ work related to population, overconsumption, sustainability, environmental activism, organizing and/or communications.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with the media, giving interviews and writing press releases.
- Proven management of staff, volunteers or activists, and projects.
- A solid grasp of issues related to population, overconsumption, sustainable living, diet choices, endangered species and environmental effects, and knowledge of the current political and cultural context related to these issues.
- Strong strategic-planning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team. 
- Ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment.
- Nonprofit experience preferred.
