Job Description

SEI seeks a mid- to senior-level researcher to build upon and expand SEI’s climate change mitigation research on the role of cities in global GHG abatement as well as in other areas, such as fossil fuel supply and economics and carbon markets.

This position will be based in the Seattle office, which focuses on climate policy with a particular interest in the roles of cities, land use, and fossil fuel supply in mitigating global GHG emissions. SEI’s Seattle staff work closely with government agencies, policy-makers, and research organizations nationally and internationally, as well as in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. They also regularly collaborate with SEI colleagues worldwide.

The Policy Researcher will join SEI’s Seattle team and conduct and manage research activities that assess and advance the contribution of urban policy towards climate change mitigation.  Additional areas of focus will depend in part on the successful applicant’s particular strengths, but may also include the economics of fossil fuel extraction and processing, life-cycle assessment, emissions accounting frameworks, and carbon markets.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Plan, develop and implement innovative research projects addressing policies and actions to enhance GHG emissions abatement by city-scale policy.
  • Play key roles in other research projects addressing the intersection of fossil fuel supply and climate change policy, the evolving role of market mechanisms at local and international levels, and the design and analysis of other energy and climate policies and measures.
  • Maintain and build relationships with existing funders and partners and secure new funding opportunities.
  • Manage, mentor, and collaborate with staff researchers, provide regular guidance and feedback to colleagues, and monitor the quality of the research process.
  • Explore joint research opportunities and collaborate with colleagues at other SEI centers.
  • Review and manage project outputs from the research team, including publications and other materials to ensure they meet the project objectives and SEI quality standards.
  • Present externally and raise the profile of SEI research.

Qualifications

The position is likely to be a mid- to senior-level position, depending on the strengths of the successful applicant. At a minimum, applicants should possess strong leadership, management, organizational, interpersonal, and networking abilities. She/he should have both a strong interdisciplinary inclination in research efforts and a strong commitment to protecting the natural environment and improving human well-being.

Additionally, the position requires:

  • An advanced degree and/or significant work experience, a Ph.D. plus 1 year of work experience or master’s degree plus 5 years of work experience, and a publication record in related field such as urban planning, energy economics, or climate policy.
  • Knowledge of and networks and contacts in one or more of the following policy arenas: urban GHG abatement, carbon markets, natural resource economics.
  • Solid, demonstrated experience applying quantitative analysis to policy applications and emissions accounting, including the use of modeling tools or interpretation of modeling results to develop estimates of GHG abatement potentials.
  • Demonstrated strong writing and presentation skills (for both technical and public audiences).
  • A strong record of research project design and management, securing external funding, and publications.
  • Good communications skills and ability and desire to work as a team player.
  • Proven success in work relations with a range of partners, such as research institutes, governments, and other non-profit organizations.
