Job Description  :  Policy Officer
Location:   Flexible
Hours:   Full time

The Climate Action Network – International (CAN) is seeking a Policy Officer to assist in the policy coordination activities for the Network.  The Policy Officer will work closely with the International Policy Coordinator to ensure that CAN leads on international climate policy development and advocacy.  
 
The primary objectives of the Policy Officer are to:
·        Work with CAN policy working groups to achieve the objectives of the Network and effectively influence government positions by enabling working groups to develop updated strategies and policy positions and  have active group members that are engaging effectively;
·        Enhance communication across the Network and external communication;
·        Generally work with the CAN Secretariat to ensure that the network is as effective as possible.
 
Specifically, the Policy Officer will:
·        Support CAN Working Group Coordinators to organize meetings/teleconferences; understand CAN processes; share information; and generally be effective;
·        Produce newsletters, web tools and other products to enhance information flows and understanding within the network;
·        Update the CAN website with relevant information;
·        Manage CAN’s list serves and other information dissemination tools;
·        Maintain lobby and coordination tools, under direction of the International Policy Coordinator;
·        Work with CAN Secretariat staff to creatively devise new tools and methods of policy and advocacy coordination for the Network;
·        Participate in coordination activities;
·        Assist with Network strategy planning;
·        Participate in CAN Secretariat preparations for UNFCCC negotiations;
·        Attend UNFCCC negotiations and work with the CAN Secretariat to provide support to members.
 
Qualifications and Experience:
·        Ability to travel internationally 4-6 times a year for 1-3 weeks at a time is essential;
·        Experience working in climate, development, or a related field;
·        Excellent interpersonal skills;
·        Ability to manage a diverse workload, and input from multiple sources;
·        Ability to manage stressful situations and to work under pressure;
·        Understanding of climate change issues is essential, and the international climate negotiations is desirable;
·        Experience working in or with Developing Countries;
·        Experience of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds is an advantage;
·        Experience with CAN is advantageous;
·        University degree, preferably with an international orientation;
·        Ability and experience working in a remote office and/or independently managing workload;
·        Fluency in English required, additional UN language skills a plus;
·        Proficiency with MS Office suite and Google documents platform;
·        Proficiency with web tools, eg html programming, will be viewed positively;
 
Salary:  Salary will depend on experience and location.
Duration:  This position is ongoing depending on funding.
Reports to:  International Policy Coordinator.
Location:  Physical location for this position is flexible although ideally it would be from within the offices of an existing CAN member group or regional office.
