ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The International Climate Policy Associate supports The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals by working with a multi-disciplinary climate change team, focal area teams and TNC’s field offices to develop and implement a strategy to advance international climate policies, partnerships and agreements at the global, regional and national levels to cope with the impacts of dangerous anthropogenic climate change. In particular, she/he will support The Nature Conservancy’s work in providing expert advice on climate finance to the Government of Peru as incoming COP Presidency for COP20 in Lima next December 2014. She/he will also work as part of the Science for Nature and People (SNAP) Coastal Defenses project on assessments of the institutional and socio-economic arrangements for effectiveness of natural defenses in coastal risk reduction and adaptation.
The position reports to the Senior Policy Advisor – International Climate Policy in the International Government Relations Department. More specifically, she/he will:
Draft analyses, memos, presentations, and communications documents around climate change negotiations and other related international meetings and events, with particular focus on climate finance;
As part of SNAP develop a report that analyze policy, economic and fiscal incentives that have effectively integrated natural defenses into climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies and develops recommendations on incentivizing nature based solutions, particularly in the coastal environment;
Translate documents into and write policy analyses in Spanish as relevant;
Attend key international climate change meetings and other relevant events to provide support in real-time to the Senior Policy Advisor;
Provide support and assistance to the Senior Policy Advisor on a wide variety of administrative duties, including coordination of team meetings and events calendar, travel and events logistics, information/data management, among others.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy or other relevant field and 3 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience on international climate change policy.
Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into a cohesive reporting structure.
Experience writing and editing policy analyses and briefs.
Fluency in both English and Spanish.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, development studies, natural resource management or related field and at least 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience engaging and developing relationships with policy makers, Government representatives as well as multilateral and bilateral agencies.
Working experience around the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as other global climate change policy processes. Working knowledge on international climate finance would be a plus.
Proven organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to meet deadlines and manage time and diverse activities.
Ability to work with a wide variety of actors, including policymakers, representatives of other governments, business and the non-governmental community.
Fluency in both English and Spanish.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
Position term is twelve months.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
Willingness to travel up to 20% of time, on short notice.
Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
