Bellona Europa Job opening: Policy Assistant, Industrial Decarbonisation (Traineeship)

As a watchdog against greenwashing, unafraid to address contentious issues, we also endeavour to cooperate with all stakeholders interested in immediate climate action. For decades, from our Oslo and Brussels offices, and more recently from our Berlin office, we have been advocating transformative climate action in industry.   

We are looking for a proactive, highly motivated and talented Policy Assistant to support our EU policy work on industrial decarbonisation. As a Policy Assistant, you will be an integral part of our team and work closely with our Policy Advisor on Sustainable Economy and CCS.  

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • A university degree (Master’s degree is preferred) in a relevant field e.g., EU Climate and Environmental Policy, Public Policy, Climate System Science and Engineering, Sustainable Development, Environmental Governance, Economics. 
  • Some relevant experience in policy/advocacy, with a particular a focus on sustainability and climate change mitigation. 
  • Understanding of the policy-making process at EU. Knowledge of regulations, policies, and frameworks related to the industrial decarbonisation is a plus.  
  • Strong interest in EU climate policy and advocacy, with a desire to learn and grow in these areas.   
  • Demonstrable ability to engage with stakeholders and institutions of the EU is a plus. 
  • Experience conducting research and with critical thinking. 
  • Strong communication skills, and an interest to work in a multicultural environment. 
  • Ability to work proactively and collaboratively within a team.  
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally.   
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written. 
  • Eligibility to work and reside in Belgium. 

Key responsibilities:  

  • Assist in the monitoring of policy initiatives related to industrial decarbonisation e.g., analysing policy proposals, drafting reaction, opinions and suggestions for amendments etc.   
  • Conduct research, evaluate data, and stay up to date on the latest developments and trends in industrial decarbonisation policy. 
  • Support collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including legislative bodies at EU level, other NGOs, and industry. 
  • Support in the preparation and delivery of presentations, reports and policy briefings for diverse audiences. 
  • Assisting with the organisation of workshops, events, conferences or webinars.  
  • Support in the development of communication material, including for social media.  
  • Participate in representing Bellona Europa at relevant conferences, workshops, and events, sharing insights and expanding networks.  
  • Contribute to the organisation’s overall mission by actively participating in other initiatives and projects as required.  

We offer you a meaningful and engaging experience through this paid traineeship based in Brussels (full-time 38h/week) with an initial 6 to 8 months Belgian CIP contract, starting as soon as possible. Remuneration overview: about 1300 EUR net per month in total, including meal vouchers & a homework allowance. Bellona covers the phone calls & commuting tickets from home to the office.
