Contract: | Full-time, fixed-term maternity cover  (6 months) |

Location: | Flexible – role requires regular travel to meetings around Wales, particularly Cardiff and to MCS HQ in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire  |

We are seeking a seeking a talented and enthusiastic Policy and Advocacy Manager (Wales) to lead on Welsh policy areas and to have input into wider UK policy, when needed. This post will be an exciting combination of policy and advocacy in order to achieve real changes for our marine environment.   

This is the ideal opportunity for someone with a background in policy and legislation, in marine or another environmental subject.  You’ll be instrumental in providing advice for the development of coherent marine policy, for making responses to policy consultations and being active in environmental policy or political liaison work.  You’ll be representing MCS with assurance at attending policy events and integral to developing MCS policy documents. 

As a confident communicator, you will have a track record in responding to consultations, producing persuasive documents for a range of audiences and be able to achieve MCS' conservation objectives through policy advocacy. 

The remit will include implementing UK legislation, such as the Marine Act and National legislation such as Wellbeing of Future Generation Act and products of the Environment Act (Wales) and supporting MCS work on our exit from the EU.  

Key Skills 

  • Understanding of issues surrounding marine policy including European, UK and National acts and any other forthcoming relevant bills 
  • Experienced in writing persuasive responses to government consultations in marine or another environmental discipline 
  • Have an understanding of how government policy is developed and implemented 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, confidence when presenting in a compelling way to a range of audiences, including Members of the Welsh Assembly.
