Job DescriptionThe areas of research that will require support vary from day to day and from year to year. However, they will broadly cover the following areas: - Water policy and governance (freshwater and marine).
- Industrial pollution control policy and implementation.
- Waste policy.
- Institutional governance, including in non-EU countries.
The research is funded through a variety of mechanisms, ranging from multi-year research framework funding to short-term consultancy contracts with the European Commission or Member State governments. Particular aspects of the job will include: - Supporting research through gathering data, information, interviews, etc., relevant to specific projects.
- Undertaking analysis (quantitative and/or qualitative) of data, literature, etc.
- Contributing to the writing of reports, papers and other research outputs.
- Contributing to the preparation of tenders and proposals for further research.
- Contributing to management of projects, project database, presentations at meetings, etc., as appropriate.
IEEP is a relatively small organisation, so like other staff the appointed candidate will be required to show commitment and flexibility in undertaking a range of general tasks in pursuit of the smooth running, effectiveness and development of the Institute. Person SpecificationThe ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes. Essential Qualities - A postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant natural or social science discipline (natural science/European studies/ European law);
- 3-4 years of relevant work experience;
- Knowledge of at least one specific relevant policy area (water, waste, industrial pollution and/or institutional development);
- Demonstrated quantitative and/or qualitative research skills;
- Excellent written and spoken English, proven experience in writing and editing reports in English, and the ability to present information in a clear, precise and accessible style;
- Demonstrable ability to plan and manage tasks effectively and accurately, to produce work of high quality under pressure, and to meet tight deadlines;
- A good level of computer literacy including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and experience of web based research;
- Enthusiasm and adaptability to work across a range of subjects as part of a team, and ability to communicate effectively with staff within IEEP and in other organisations.
Desirable - Understanding and knowledge of EU affairs, including, policies, EU institutions, and policy-making processes.
IEEP is a small organisation, so like other senior staff, the post holder will be required to show commitment and flexibility in undertaking a range of general management tasks in pursuit of the smooth running, effectiveness and development of the Institute.
This is a permanent contract (subject to a probationary period) and will be based in our London office. Salary range: £21,000 – 26,000 gross annual salary (Appointment at the higher end of the scale will be dependent on previous experience) All applications must reach us by noon on Monday 16 November 2009.
