Based in Berlin, this role will lead on E3G’s sustainable finance work in Germany and support work across the European Union, including Central and Eastern Europe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planning and delivering a program of work which will support Germany to: i) put in place high-ambition domestic sustainable finance policies, ii) support high-ambition EU sustainable finance outcomes, iii) make sustainable finance a diplomatic priority. This will include identifying ambitious policy outcomes together with a plan for delivery, and taking forward associated work in the context of E3G’s broader strategy for delivering strong climate policy outcomes in Germany. 
  • Playing a leading role to support E3G’s sustainable finance work in Central & Eastern Europe. Working with colleagues from other E3G programs as part of a broader ‘CEE Hub’ team based in Berlin and also working in partnership with colleagues in Brussels who focus on sustainable finance. 
  • Supporting E3G’s work on sustainable finance at EU level as part of a wider team, working in close coordination with colleagues based in Brussels to deliver a program of work which aims  to ensure that Europe is a highly ambitious international norm-setter in sustainable finance. 
  • Tracking and analysing sustainable finance policy and political developments in Germany (and in other EU countries as required). Acting as an internal point of expertise and proactively providing timely updates and analysis both to E3G colleagues and to external stakeholders.   
  • Managing stakeholder relationships in Germany, CEE and EU. Developing, nurturing and supporting core local and regional partnerships and building relationships of trust with policy stakeholders. 
  • Contributing to E3G thought leadership and communications on sustainable finance, including delivery of relevant qualitative and quantitative analysis, research, blogs and articles and reports. Developing and presenting policy recommendations to decision-makers. 
  • Contributing to development of programme and project strategies and plans, to monitoring, evaluation and learning from project work, and to supporting strong E3G relationships with funders. 
  • Working collaboratively and proactively with E3G staff from other programmes on cross-cutting themes and outputs.  
  • International travel may be required from time to time. 

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • An undergraduate degree, and ideally a post graduate degree, in a relevant discipline such as politics, social sciences, economics, climate change and environment, foreign policy.
  • Several years’ relevant professional experience and track record in a relevant setting e.g. political, policy or research in government or international institution, civil society, think tank or research institute;
  • A good understanding of the German policy landscape on topics related to sustainability and finance, including  past and current European and German sustainable finance policy developments. Knowledge of or experience in CEE policy landscape and decision-making processes would be an advantage.
  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and be positive, organised, resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time. They should demonstrate attention to detail combined with the ability to analyse complex information to create high-level summaries. Experience of project management would be an advantage.
  • Very strong English and German written and verbal communication skills. A good working knowledge of any other European language would be an advantage.
  • Experience of building relationships and networks, and working with partner organisations, coalitions, and networks including senior stakeholders.
  • Experience of advocating for solutions, and of communicating using a range of different media, e.g. reports, blogs, social media.
