Purpose of the job:

The Polar region is under immense pressure from climate change, oil companies, fishing fleets and sovereignty claims. Greenpeace is working to protect the Polar regions by ensuring that those forces responsible for the destruction are met with a wall of public protest.

Over the next 3 years Greenpeace wants to mobilise millions of people across the world to stand with us in the fight to safeguard the Arctic. To reach these people, we will need to employ new types of communication tools, think differently and work more creatively than we have done before.

To be successful we must effectively merge our online and offline campaign work in order to offer people many ways of engaging with the movement, including investors, politicians and businesses as well as the public at large.

This is a crossover project, with goals relating to the oceans and climate campaigns as well as goals related to fundraising and mobilisation (on and off line).

The success of the public mobilisation work will be essential for securing the success of the Polar campaign, as public pressure has been identified as key to bringing the scale of change we need to see.

The position works with and coordinates a team of digital specialists, volunteer and offline activities, fundraisers and communication experts located across the world. This person will work to ensure that members of the public, our supporters and key audiences receive our campaign and fundraising messages in a coordinated way, and remain engaged in the campaign through our websites, offline events, online actions (petitions, letter writing etc) and other methods of online and offline mobilisation They will need to cooperate closely with the campaign, actions and volunteer units to synchronise online and offline mobilisation work.

The mobilisation team leader is responsible for the continuation of one of most successful mobilisation project in Greenpeace history – the Polar campaign. As such, this person must maintain the highest standards to ensure it is delivered on time and within allocated budget, strategy and scope and properly integrated with Greenpeace’s long term organisational vision.


Main responsibilities


Coordination
- Coordinate the Polar mobilisation core team, consisting of both NRO and GPI staff across expertise fields such as digital mobilisation, fundraising, communication and on/offline engagement.
- Act as the main contact point for relations with Greenpeace NROs regarding the Polar communication and mobilisation
- Represent the polar mobilisation team, which means securing support for the campaign from a wide variety of stakeholders.


Communication with Greenpeace supporters and members of the public
 
- Develop and implement a mobilisation strategy for Polar together with key stakeholders.
- Oversee online and offline mobilisation and ensure collaboration between the different units within this structure.
- Make sure that our digital communication to supporters is consistent. Resolve any communication clashes.

Public engagement
- Implement an integrated Polar mobilisation strategy with the purpose of increasing our supporter base and improving fundraising, mobilisation and depth of engagement
- Ensure that mobilised supporters are provided with consistent communications and varied opportunities to engage.
- Keep up to date with Greenpeace campaign and FR plans and activities
- Make sure that reporting standards are developed and followed to meet deadlines. For example statistics on web traffic, email open rates etc.

Fundraising
- Assist the Fundraising community in integrating Polar mobilisation in their fundraising strategy

Applied knowledge & skills
- Extensive and proven experience in supporter or marketing communication, with a particular focus on engagement with people .
- Extensive and proven experience of managing international projects, minimum 3 years of experience at Director level or equal.
- Proven experience in building up and leading strong teams of established experts with strong and sometimes uncompromising opinions.
- Extensive experience with digital mobilisation techniques and a deep understanding of online and offline engagement best practise and trends.
- Strong leadership qualities. Committed to furthering Greenpeace’s Polar campaign goals as well as the organizational development of Greenpeace. Able to inspire team spirit and resolve conflicts.
- Strong management qualities. Capacity to prepare and present detailed and realistic supporter communication strategies. Able to support and guide staff and volunteers, manage multiple projects, work to a timeline, work with sensitive information, work with minimal supervision, deal with stressful situations and meet deadlines.
- Web and IT: Savvy on social media, able to innovate with new digital campaign tools, crowd-sourcing and fully understand the value of involving as many people as possible in the campaign.
- Language: English (plus one other relevant language preferable).

- Apply a range of communication and interpersonal skills to interact with others on a number of issues of varying complexity.
- Ability to communicate effectively by demonstrating strong listening skills, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to accurately identify problems and quickly move to a satisfactory resolution.
- Participate and assist dialogue and skill sharing within Greenpeace Polar community, and Greenpeace’s international people engagement communities.
- Maintain accurate information management systems and procedures to ensure open access by other mobilisation specialists.

Analysis & decision making
- Makes decisions that impact on the delivery and quality of work in the project within a framework of operational, professional or creative guidelines.

Uses initiative and innovation to come up with recommendations on new working methods, tools, and technical approaches by interpreting information, concepts or data from diverse sources.
- Ensure that all results are monitored and analysed on a monthly basis, and deliver long-term analysis of program/budgets delegated.
- Capable of setting up relevant benchmarks.
- Actively create requirements and identify needs for fundraising and market analysis that informs decisions regarding successful project development.

Planning

Responsible for planning and prioritizing workload of the team.
- Proactively and in cooperation with the Polar team leader (Global Campaign Leader) develop and implement innovative long-term strategies for people engagement in accordance with Greenpeace principles, in order to ensure effective impact.
- Provide expertise and input as a member of a team on the development of overall Polar campaign strategies.

Line management responsibility

The Polar Mobilisation Team Leaders manages the Polar mobilisation core team, consisting of four members: Head of digital mobilisation, head of fundraising, head of offline mobilisation and head of communications.
- Responsibility for resources
- Develop, monitor and authorize expenditure of the allocated mobilisation budgets, according to agreed objectives and the priorities of the project , in order to ensure cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure.

Other - Member of the Polar core team.

Cover for Polar team Leader /global campaign leader and other team members in their absence, in order to ensure the team continues to implement ongoing work and formulate strategies that support the agreed mobilisation strategy.
- Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the position, as delegated by the line manager, upholding a principle that at least 10% of working time can be expected to be used on work outside one’s own area.
- Provide support to other departments within Greenpeace as required.
- Participate in weekly and other meetings in the project team
- Manage any volunteers or interns if applicable.


Education/experience requirements:
-
Proven leadership and management experience, 3 years at Director level
- Proven success in mobilising people on and offline.
- Experience of leading and coordinating international projects
- At least 3 years experience of working in people engagement environment, covering digital, offline, communications and fundrasing
- Experience of working with external creative agencies and other stakeholders
