At Syngenta, we believe every employee has a role to play in safely feeding the world and taking care of our planet. To support that challenge, Monocot Team is currently seeking a Plant Scientist, to be located in Durham, North Carolina. 


Role Purpose
Conduct biology and trait research activities in greenhouses, growth chambers, and laboratories
Initiate protocol development to optimize operational efficiency associated with plant care and seed production
Deliver project milestones using science based approaches
Work 40 hours per week during weekdays and weekend
Perform all activities in accordance with Syngenta Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy 


Accountabilities

  • Perform activities for corn trials including planting, watering, tissue sampling, pollination, harvesting, and seed processing
  • Implement trial protocols and communicate with project teams regarding status of trials
  • Design, test and implement innovative ideas and concepts to optimize plant growth and development
  • Make observations and record data in databases and other record keeping tools
  • Stay current on developments in greenhouse technology through literature, seminars, and workshops
  • Scout and apply pesticides and biologicals to control diseases and pests
  • Willing to obtain a NCDA pesticide applicator license
  • Able and willing to work during weekends and holidays

Qualifications

Requirements
•    BS is Required MS degree preferred in agronomic sciences or closely related discipline from an accredited university
•    Must be able to work as needed on Holidays and Weekends
•    MS office Software Experience is Required
•    Excellent Interpersonal skills and Communication Skills both Verbal and Written Required
•    Embrace Syngenta Quality Management and Stewardship Practices
•    Functioning as a member of multiple Function Team
•    Excellent knowledge of plant biology, plant physiology and agronomy
•    Demonstrated excellence as a team player
•    Demonstrated ability and motivation to work in unsupervised situations
•    Computer skills such as working with databases and environmental controls
•    Excellent record keeping skills and demonstrated attention to details
•    Ability to perform all physical aspects required in greenhouse activities


Preferred Requirements

•    Prior experience working with greenhouse and biotechnology 
•    Prior experience working with major field crops like corn and soybean
•    Understanding of project timelines and deliverables
•    Understanding of genetics and biotechnologies
•    Knowledge of greenhouse equipment and operations
•    Ability to identify plant diseases and pests
