The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for two post-doctoral physical scientists in the field of Ice-sheet/Ocean Modelling to investigate future sea-level rise from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The successful candidates will develop, run and evaluate regional models of the ocean and ice sheet in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica. These models will be used to assess the roles of natural climate variability and human-caused climate change on sea-level rise from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Applicants will need to have expertise in the use of numerical models of ocean circulation, ice-sheet dynamics, or equivalent related expertise. Experience of computer programming on linux-based systems is also required.

Applications for either post will be considered for both, but applicants may express preferences for either post in their application.


Physical scientist, modelling coupled ocean and ice sheet geophysical processes to explore the influence of natural variability and anthropogenic trends on future sea level rise from West Antarctica.


Both posts are part of a NERC-funded project (ENSO/WAIS).

Duties and responsibilities common to both posts include.

• Using models of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Amundsen Sea to forecast the future sea level contribution from this region.

• Improving our understanding of the sensitvity of the Antarctic ice sheet to changes in the ocean.

• Conducting tests using mathematical models and theories to investigate the structure, properties and dynamics of the Amundsen Sea and West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

• Helping to understand the influences of natural variability and anthropogenic change upon the future sea level contribution.

• Formally quantifying the likely range of future sea level contributions from West Antarctica.

• Applying mathematical models and techniques to assist in the solution of scientific problems.

• Presenting findings in the scientific literature and at international scientific conferences.

Post 1 (2.5 years) has an emphasis on exploring simplified models of the physics of ocean circulation and melt beneath ice shelves, and performing simulations of ice sheet and ocean to help assess the likely range of sea level rise.

Post 2 (3 years) has an emphasis on developing a novel coupling between models of the Antarctic ice sheet and the ocean, and using this model to identify the important factors that will influence future sea level rise.
