The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Photovoltaic Performance and Reliability Research and Development Group in NREL’s National Center for Photovoltaics has an immediate opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to a mximum of three years. Members of the Performance and Reliability Group perform research to enhance the community’s understanding of long-term PV module performance and reliability, failures of PV system components and accelerated testing of PV modules. The group also participates in the development of industry standards for PV performance and reliability assessment. This position is to support research in reliability of photovoltaic module packages, including determining the effects of UV, temperature and humidity on the materials and interfaces within the PV module package.
The candidate is expected to, in collaboration with group staff, design and execute experiments on the reliability of PV modules. Areas of work will include evaluation of polymer degradation due to humidity, temperature and ultra-violet radiation. Specific experiments will involve the measurement of the kinetics of reaction and activation energy for degradation mechanisms observed in PV module packaging material.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
The candidate must be experienced with designing and conducting rigorous scientific experiments and of critically analyzing results. Strong communication skills are required, including the demonstrated ability to prepare high-quality scientific publications. The candidate must show aptitude with chemistry of polymers, especially understanding the kinetics and activation of degradation processes in polymers.
Expertise in the chemistry of polymers
