The Philanthropy Research Associate will be part of a team working to support a dynamic national Philanthropy staff. The Associate will work to identify potential major donors and gather helpful biographical information for special events. Collecting and interpreting data from in-house and on-line databases, the Associate will create clear and informative prospect profiles that are used to qualify prospects and assist in determining appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. The Associate will also work to incorporate research results into the Philanthropy database.

The Philanthropy Research Associate will be supervised by the Director of Prospect Research, and will collaborate regularly with two other Philanthropy Researchers, as well as Philanthropy and Project staff around the country. The Associate will work in the San Francisco headquarters.

Essential Functions

  •  Use resource materials (including in-house and on-line databases, reference texts, and directories) to identify, analyze and create in-depth profiles on individual, corporate, and foundation prospects
  • Translate information into clear and concise biographical profiles
  • Identify and link prospects by common elements (interests, business, hobbies, backgrounds, affiliations, etc.)
  • Identify new prospects and ensure they are added to donor database
  • Meet with fundraising staff as needed to participate in strategy discussions and to remain aware of research needs and follow-up.
  • Participate in training with other departments and with professional research organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned, including occasional special research projects

 Qualifications

  • 1 – 3 years experience in a research capacity, preferably in Philanthropy
  • Significant expertise in using on-line databases (such as Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, and Internet search engines) for research purposes. Experience in using Windows-based donor database programs, preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality is absolutely required 
  • Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, and make recommendations
  • Ability to work independently, balance multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in relevant computer programs (MS Office, e-mail, calendar management tools, etc.)
  • Effectively utilize office resources to perform duties in an efficient manner
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues by building rapport, effectively and efficiently responding to requests, and generally providing good service to our fundraisers.
