ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The primary responsibility of the Philanthropy Communications Specialist is to develop philanthropy and communication materials in support of private fundraising activities for the Latin American Region (LAR). S/he develops a full array of donor materials for US and in-region donors, such as proposals, reports, grants, donor cultivation and stewardship communications, information for volunteer leaders, and materials for donor trips and events.  S/he serves as the local point of contact for flow of content from the operating unit to the Conservancy’s US based philanthropy staff.  The Communications Specialist works closely with LAR marketing staff to ensure consistency of materials and messages.

The Communications Specialist must also work with the operating unit’s conservation staff to fully understand and articulate the region’s conservation challenges, goals, actions and outcomes for communications and fundraising needs. S/he is responsible for synthesizing complex technical program information and data for use in fundraising. S/he may attend conservation meetings to facilitate content gathering and programmatic knowledge. The Communications Specialist will also be responsible for fact-checking fundraising materials and donor/volunteer communications. Approximately 80% of the Communications Specialist’s time will be spent on US-fundraising and 20% in-region fundraising.

Although this position reports to the Conservation Program, it is also part of LAR’s philanthropy, marketing and communications team and as such will be expected to participate in team meetings, training's and calls. The Philanthropy Communications Specialist also works closely with the Worldwide Office Campaign Team.

Other key internal partners include: LAR conservation staff, chapter and WO-based philanthropy staff, and LAR Marketing staff
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field and at least 2 years of related work experience or equivalent combination.
• Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese required.
• Experience in grant/proposal writing, researching and editing is required.
• Experience translating documents from one language to another.
• Experience editing and/or proofreading.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office suite of software applications.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field and at least 2 years of related work experience or equivalent combination.
• Proven experience in grant/proposal writing, researching and editing is required.
• Strong writing, organizational and proofreading skills. Attention to detail a must.
• Superior written and oral communication skills in English; native English highly preferred.
• Excellent conversational and written Spanish or Portuguese required. Ability to translate documents between one language (Spanish or Portuguese to and from English) and another.
• Knowledge of fundraising principles, practices and proposal writing preferred.
• Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
• Ability & willingness to travel domestically or internationally as needed.
• Ability to coordinate/manage processes and projects that require participation and contribution from staff for which the Specialist has no direct supervisory responsibility.
• Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.  Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.  Ability to use advanced computer functions for purposes of document formatting and researching content, including navigating the Internet.
• Personal passion for preserving and protecting the natural world with a belief in the mission, principles, and values of The Nature Conservancy’s global approach to conservation.

• Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision in written and presentation materials.  Formulate and clearly communicate ideas to others. 
• Ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including donors, members, board members, and others.
• Support solicitation efforts through clear written communications, including proposal writing and other written materials.
• Solid communication and presentation skills. Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.  Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
• Work is performed in a typical office setting with potential for occasional travel.
