Agricultural greenhouse gas emissions make up almost half of New Zealand’s total emissions, a situation unique in the developed world. As a nation we are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and have embarked on an ambitious research and innovation programme to develop technologies to reduce emissions from the agricultural sector. The newly establishment New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) will build on our well established reputation in this field of research and provide you the opportunity to develop your research career in a dynamic and rapidly changing area. This is a unique opportunity to play a critical research role in what is an internationally significant emissions reduction initiative.

The NZAGRC is a partnership comprising nine of New Zealand’s leading research organisations. Significant new investment in science infrastructure means access to leading-edge research facilities and resources and the opportunity to work alongside some of New Zealand’s leading researchers. What’s more, our funding is guaranteed for the next decade, so the latitude to deliver practical, cost effective technologies and practices is unparalleled. If you want to share in tackling one of the world’s most significant scientific challenges, advancing your career in the process, one of the opportunities below will be your way to make it happen.

# Host organisation Project overview
AGR1142 Methane Modelling - Improving the predictions of enteric methane production from forage diets across different ruminant species using a modelling approach.

This PhD scholarship is available with Massey University providing the academic supervision and the research work being based at the Grasslands campus in Palmerston North, New Zealand. This PhD project will involve opportunities for research exchanges with overseas groups involved in methane modelling.

This project will conduct a critical examination of the principal factors driving methanogenesis in the rumen of sheep and cattle grazing temperate forages. The knowledge generated as part of this PhD will result in improved models for predicting enteric methane prediction in ruminants. The candidate will advance the knowledge on the metabolic processes that contribute to the formation and utilisation of hydrogen in the rumen, and how methanogenic microbes respond to it. Long term outcomes include generation of knowledge that will guide animal science and microbiology research programmes on development of mitigation strategies for methanogenesis.
The person best suited to this project will have a strong academic background in areas such as animal science (or related discipline), statistics and mathematics. The candidate will have a strong interest in the study of digestion and metabolism of nutrients, with emphasis in ruminant digestive processes. It is desirable to have good computer and software skills.

The position includes a PhD stipend of up to NZ$30,000 (tax free) per year for three years, plus tuition fees, research expenses and opportunities to attend conferences.
