Description

The position offers the possibility to acquire a broad range of analytical and conceptual skills within environmental analytical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry. The Ph.D. student would join an internationally recognized group of researchers and have full access to state-of-the-art field sampling and analytical facilities. Our research-oriented department hosts a large, active and international Ph.D. student group and the students would also be immersed in the interdepartmental Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research, a national centre of excellence at Stockholm University.

Terms and conditions for EU Initial Training Network (ITN) PhD Fellowships

The Stockholm-based fellow would be part of the 16 PhD student cohort of the CSI:ENVIRONMENT program located through the 12 Partner organizations of the ITN. The highly selective ITN program offers full PhD salary benefits (incl. social security insurance) and additional benefits to the fellow including monthly living and mobility allowance as well as a personal travel allowance. The fellow must be an early-stage researcher (< 4 years of research/training experience since obtaining a university degree qualifying for entering into PhD programs. The fellow must not have lived >12 months in the preceding 36 months in the host country (Sweden) at the start of the PhD program. The ITN program also offers many opportunities to the cohort for joint training courses and study visits.

Ph.D. thesis on isotope-based source apportionment of climate-affecting black carbon aerosols – (Position ref. Dnr ITM-2010-28; contact for further information Prof. Örjan Gustafsson via orjan.gustafsson@itm.su.se)

Atmospheric particles such as combustion-derived black carbon (soot) play a central role in climate change yet the relative source contributions from various fossil fuel and biomass combustion practices are poorly constrained. This Ph.D. thesis project would apply 13C, 14C, and possibly 2H isotopic methods to constrain the black carbon sources; information useful for society to direct efforts to reduce emissions. 12-months field sampling campaigns are planned for both the Arctic (Svalbard) and central Europe (Czech Republic).

Qualifications

We are seeking a highly motivated student with a university degree in natural science (including basic chemistry courses) and a genuine interest in interdisciplinary environmental/climate research. Your background is likely in earth, atmospheric and environmental sciences, chemistry or engineering. Experience in instrumental analysis of organic compounds would be an asset but is not a requirement.

Stockholm University is an equal opportunity employer. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research. Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.

Application

This is one of two advertised Ph.D. student positions at Stockholm university within the CSI:ENVIRONMENT program. Submit your applications, separate for each position, including CV, transcripts of university courses with grades, a copy of your university degree, a cover letter outlining your interest and qualifications for the position, contact information to two reference persons, and any other documents (e.g., diploma thesis or other proof of scientific writing skills) you would like to include on or before 15 February 2011 to
