To undertake the assessment of species licence applications to ensure the activities fall within the purposes allowed under the legislation and in respect of the Wildlife and Countryside Act and that the statutory tests are applied.

 Job Specific Responsibilities  

  • Determine applications for species licences by carrying out appropriate checks and tests in accordance with legal requirement, policies and procedures.
  • Support delivery of mentoring and coaching to aid technical development of other officers within the team, ensuring consistency and quality of service delivery.
  • Represent the species permitting team on relevant internal working groups, stakeholder groups and training events.   
  • Provide advice to internal and external customers.     
  • Build up strong working relationships with ops and KSP teams.
  • Identify opportunities for changes to process and guidance needed to deliver efficient and effective permitting service, and lead on co-ordinating the change as required.
  • Ensure data is collated and managed to ensure effective reporting on a national and international basis.
  • Assist in the monitoring of licences 

Job Specific Requirements 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to establish and maintain networks, and the ability to communicate clearly, confidently and persuasively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organisational and administration skills and the ability to meet targets and work to deadlines.
  • Good problem solving and team working skills, including supervisory skills. The ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, NRW intranet and internet in a Windows environment.
  • Knowledge of UK and European legislation relating to protected species and species ecology.
  • Knowledge of the planning system 

Due consideration has been given to the Welsh language requirements for the post and the existing skills within the team. Taking this into consideration the Welsh language skills required for the post are at Level 1 (The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (e.g. “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly).

 Status  

This is a permanent, pensionable part-timeappointment. (21 to 25 hours)

 Salary 

Pro rata to a full-time salary of £21,748.00. This role will be subject to a forthcoming Job Evaluation exercise and this may result in a change to the salary.
