Position Description: Permaculture Manager

The Cape Eleuthera Island School is a seeking a qualified Permaculture Manager for a full-time position with an immediate start. The ideal candidate will build upon our present design systems in water, waste, energy and communication to create a sustainable environment for teaching. The design at CEI aims to harmoniously integrate the landscape and people, using modern technologies and holistic site planning alongside traditional farming systems to create a community that supports and regenerates itself. The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design landscapes to increase food abundance and build upon natural synergies.
  • Teach visiting school groups and Island School students about sustainable systems.
  • Promote and develop local business connections and outreach partnerships that lead to a growth of sustainable industries on Eleuthera (farmer’s market).
  • Manage and supervise permaculture interns, students, or assistants.
  • Produce research, publish papers, and make presentations related to Permaculture activities at CEI/IS.
  • Manage a range of projects related to permaculture and sustainable development initiatives on campus.
Minumum Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or demonstrated practical experience of equal value in horticulture, hydroponic growing, aquaculture, animal husbandry, botany or landscape design.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience, preferably with a diverse population.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience of a small team.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Knowledge of fish husbandry, animal husbandry, plant life cycles, grafting, propagation, and plant physiology.
  • Certificate in Permaculture Design preferred.
Compensation & Benefits

This position is five days a week, rotating schedule to include weekends with board (breakfast and lunch) included. Staff receive four weeks of paid vacation per calendar year not to be taken all at once. A one year commitment is preferred to start with longer term career opportunities. Room, board and medical insurance are provided. We are a Bahamian equal opportunity employer.
