Description

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is an executive agency of Scottish Government and manages Scotland’s Forest and Land. We manage land on behalf of Scottish Ministers and serve as part of the Environment and Forestry directorate of the Scottish Government.

 

In this role you will work within one of FLS’s Regional Delivery Teams. To help you settle in quickly you’ll be provided with training and mentoring and will be working closely with experienced team members to help you settle quickly into the role.

 

FLS aims to be an exemplar of best practice sustainable forest management and all our activities are independently certified to the UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS).

 

Your role will be to plan, deliver and monitor peatland habitat restoration projects, and to work with colleagues, partner groups, organisations and individuals on peatland restoration related projects throughout the Region.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver and monitor peatland habitat restoration projects within the Region;
  • Work with colleagues, partner groups, organisations and individuals on peatland restoration related projects;
  • Collaborate with and support regional Civil Engineers to improve access to peatland sites identified for future restoration;
  • Act as Contract Manager to agree, issue and manage the contracts required to deliver the Region’s peatland restoration programme;
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety measures are in place at all times.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

*  Management and supervision of contract(s) within the land management sector, e.g. forest management, timber harvesting, and/or environment and recreation projects;

*  Management of health and safety;

*  Use of GIS systems such as Arc-view or Forester Web.

Desirable

*  Managing or being involved in a habitat restoration project;

*  Proven track record of delivering or assisting in the delivery of large scale work programmes;

*  Use of Project Management tools in co-ordinating or managing a large programme or project;

*  Involvement in peatland modification and restoration in Scotland or UK.

Technical Skills

Essential

*  Knowledge of contract management procedures;

*  Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety systems;

*  IT computer skills;

*  HND or degree level qualification (or equivalent) or relevant experience in Environmental Management or a related subject.

Desirable

*  Knowledge of peatland habitat restoration techniques employed in Scotland;

*  Knowledge of what modifications to peatlands have been carried out in the past;

*  Understanding of forest or land management planning, and delivery mechanisms/systems for related work programmes.
