Description

This role is about helping the four wildlife charities with large landholdings in the UK - the Woodland Trust, the Wildlife Trusts, RSPB and the National Trust – to work together. More specifically, your task is to help all four organisations to turn around the decline in wildlife - by working collaboratively across whole landscapes.

The post is a two year fixed term ‘shared post’, jointly funded by all four organisations. It could suit someone working on secondment from one of the partners, or if recruited from outside, they would be employed as a member of National Trust staff, and managed as part of the NT’s National Specialist team.

What it's like to work here

This partnership was begun in 2015 by the CEOs of these organisations. We recognised that as four wildlife charities with large landholdings we could achieve more through closer co-operation. We knew that we had many great examples of our teams working together in vibrant partnerships, but that there were other places where we were complementary or even competitive, but could achieve far more by being more collaborative.

There is remarkably synergy between the four organisations: all were set up to conserve wildlife, with landownership and management as one of their primary means to do so. Collectively we own or manage nearly half a million hectares of land, which means we can have a major impact on the wildlife of the UK. But we also have a direct influence over an equal or larger area of land owned by others. Our expertise, experience and capability are just as important an asset as the land we own.

What you'll be doing

You will need to help change the way we work, in two main ways. Firstly making sure we think, plan and deliver at a landscape scale; taking an ecosystem approach, achieving change at a large scale and catalysing change beyond the boundaries of our own land. The second key role is improving the way we work together, collaborating in practical partnerships that involve sharing experience, expertise and resources on the ground.

The four CEO’s take a close interest in this partnership, and are expecting it to foster and support collaboration right through the organisations, and across all four countries. At the end of the two years, we do not just expect some landscapes to be changing, we expect the way the four organisations work to have changed.

This role will require extensive travel across the UK, including staying away overnight on a regular basis.

Who we're looking for

You will need to have a passion for landscape scale working and a background in wildlife conservation. Communication and networking skills are vital. One day you will be working with practitioners on the ground to find solutions to obstacles they face, and the next contributing to discussions with Directors and CEOs.

Fundamental to this initiative are successful projects, and you’ll need a good understanding of what makes a good partnership project work. You’ll need to be organised, and have the drive ‘to make things happen’.

Part of this role is about changing ways of working, in all four organisations, and an understanding of organisational cultures and experience of working for or with one or more of the organisations would be invaluable.

The package

The advertised salary and benefits would apply to someone joining the National Trust. If seconded to the role the salary and benefits would be for negotiation with the employing organization.
