Job Title: Communications Officer – Oceans Campaign
Reports to: Communications Director, working directly with the Johannesburg-based Communications Manager and in close liaison with the Campaign Operations Manager and Oceans Campaigners
Location: Dakar; with occasional travel depending on campaign and communication requirements
Working Modalities: three times a week

Overview
To support, lead, develop and implement communication strategies and creative concepts for the Greenpeace Africa oceans campaign in Senegal. This includes:
- Adhering to identity guidelines and profiling plans for Greenpeace Africa’s ocean campaign.
- Ensure the delivery of agreed campaign and organisational communication strategies in alignment with the Organization Development Plan.
Main responsibilities
1. Communications design and implementation
- Formulate and deliver effective ocean communication strategies and activities, in cooperation with the Communication Manager.
- Advise senior management on the formulation and execution of Greenpeace Africa's ocean campaign communication design and strategic direction.
- Maintain an overview of key external developments particularly in West Africa.
- Implement message testing and evaluation of campaign communications messages and materials through media monitoring and coverage analysis
- Provide content on the Oceans campaign for the french side of the Greenpeace Africa website.
- Under the guidance of web editor, provide frequent twitter and facebook updates for the Greenpeace Africa french readers.
2. Africa Communication Strategy
Under the guidance of the GP Africa Communications Director, and in close liaison with the Oceans Campaigns Team and Africa Communications team, coordinate the formulation, development, agreement and implementation of innovative, creative, pro-active and reactive campaign communication strategies and objectives.
Provide strategic communication input into design of any communication program, using core communication principles, audience centered-thinking and understanding of delivery across multiple platforms.
3. Budget
- Develop, monitor and authorize budget expenditure of the relevant communications unit.
- Negotiate appropriate level of budget necessary for a campaign/project with relevant party.
4. External Network and Engagement
- Build and maintain national and international networks with industry, suppliers, NGOs, public and paid media.
- Work with the outreach coordinator and the new media coordinator to develop and implement an engagement plan across the three offices.
5. Alignment on policy
- Ensure all communication material produced by Greenpeace Africa adheres to editorial policies and in line with the identity guidelines across all platforms.
- Ensure consistency in communication content and presentation style.
Selection Criteria
Required:
- Masters degree or equivalent
- Excellent spoken and written French and English
- Thorough understanding of media and communications operations in West Africa
- Proven success record in campaign based marketing and branding, knowledge of marketing and advertising techniques
- Experience in working in international environment
- Management experience especially budget management
- Ability to conceive and implement ideas single-handedly as well as ensure that those around deliver work in a collaborative manner
- Articulate, creative, passionate & tenacious.
