  • General Position Description: This position is responsible for interpretive and maintenance duties of Eisenhower State Park. Assists with daily operations, maintenance, repair, cultural/natural resource interpretation, presentation of outreach and educational programs and routine customer service. Duties include facility repair such as electrical, carpentry and plumbing. Grounds maintenance to include trail maintenance, general equipment maintenance and repair. Assists with visitor registration and revenue collection. Conducts hikes/tours on rough terrain, programs, and assists with development of exhibits and interpretive programming. Provides direction to volunteers, interns and alternative workforce. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Working Conditions: (1) Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; (2) Required to respond to emergency situations; (3) Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions; (4) Required to lead tours/hikes in rugged terrain; (5) Required to travel with possible overnight stays; (6) Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles; (7) Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 80 lbs; (8) Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree. Acceptable Substitutions: (1) Three years of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs with 30 semester hours of the required education; OR (2) Two years of experience with 60 semester hours may substitute for the required education. Preferred Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History or closely related field.
    • Experience: No experience required. Preferred Experience: (1) Customer service experience; (2) Park operations experience; (3) Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs; (4) General maintenance and cleaning of facilities, grounds, trails and equipment; (5) Experience in natural and cultural resource management. Note: Experience may have occurred concurrently.
    • License/Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license. Note: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.
  • Selection Criteria:
    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (1) Knowledge of basic mathematics; (2) Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management and conservation principles; (3) Knowledge of interpretation/education programs and techniques such as living history, exhibit development and special events; (4) Knowledge to develop, implement, manage, publicize and evaluate related interpretive programs; (5) Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks; (6) Knowledge general custodial duties; (7) Knowledge of trail maintenance techniques; (8) Skill in effective verbal and written communication; (9) Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts; (10) Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook; (11) Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment; (12) Skill in developing and presenting accurate and creative guided tours, educational and interpretive programs to audiences of all ages; (13) Skill to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration or customer service duties on an as-needed basis; (14) Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner; (15) Skill in managing several projects simultaneously; (16) Skill in making independent, sound, timely decisions; (17) Ability to perform work in accordance with agency safety program, work rules and resource conservation principles; (18) Ability to survey customers for program quality; (19) Ability to handle complaints, emergencies and a high volume of people; (20) Ability to work under stressful conditions; (21) Ability to handle cash, collect fees and sell licenses; (22) Ability to learn an on-line registration system; (23) Ability to coordinate the work of others; (24) Ability to work well with diverse groups and age ranges; (25) Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities; (26) Ability to work independently with little or no supervision; (27) Ability to work as a member of a team; (28) Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 80 lbs; (29) Ability to lead tours/hikes on rough terrain.
