Description
IMPORTANT:  This Advertiser has requested that applicants MUST be National Residents / Valid Work Permit-holders.  Other applicants need not apply.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is in the process of implementing a new Land Information System.  As a result there is a requirement for an individual to support the data conversion exercise.

Some data will be automatically converted from existing databases and spreadsheets, but a significant portion of the data required by the system is not stored in a structured digital form. Some of the data required is currently stored in paper files; other data is stored digitally in word documents or excel spreadsheets. This information will need to be sourced, reviewed, interpreted and data transferred into an interim MS Access database.

In addition to data migration responsibilities, the Summer Intern will have the option to spend some of their time with Mhairi McFarlane, Conservation Biologist for NCC’s southwestern Ontario subregion.  This opportunity will include field visits to NCC properties and work such as plant and wildlife inventory, invasive species removal and seed collection/planting.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. sourcing land conservation data (with support from existing NCC staff)
  2. preparing documents, and identifying and interpreting data to be entered
  3. carrying out data entry
  4. running reports to identify data gaps and anomalies
  5. working with NCC staff and partners to identify and resolve questions, inconsistencies, or missing data
  6. providing regular reporting on data entry progress
  7. assist with field work at NCC properties, including some in-office follow-up such as compiling species lists and helping complete Property Management Plans

Skills:

  1. a high level of familiarity with Word and Excel
  2. a demonstrated experience of inputting data into an Access database or other applications
  3. prior experience with data conversion/migration projects would be desirable
  4. education or previous work experience related to natural sciences and land conservation data (e.g. species, vegetation communities, land securement, land stewardship, legal agreements)
  5. GIS experience would be beneficial, but is not required
  6. ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing with NCC staff located in multiple offices
  7. excellent time management skills to allow for effective multi-tasking and meeting deadlines
  8. ability to follow instructions provided in verbal or written format

Terms of Employment:

This is a full-time (30 hours per week) position which will begin May 31, 2010 and end July 23, 2010.  The offered salary is $10.25/hour ($307.50/week).
